Austin Bogina, Ph.D.

Assistant Teaching Professor

Dr. Austin C. Bogina is the undergraduate program director of sport management and an assistant teaching professor at the University of Kansas. He also assists in leading the Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Science’s Name, Image, and Likeness certification. A Southeast Kansas native from Arma, Dr. Bogina graduated from Pittsburg State University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (Kindergarten-6th), followed by a Master of Science (2019) and Doctorate (2022) in Sport Management from the University of Kansas, both with an emphasis in entrepreneurship. As a teacher, Dr. Bogina has taught Introduction to Sport Management, Sport Law, Sport Market Research, Global Sport Management (Study Abroad), Professional Development Preparation in Sport Management, Sport Fundraising and Sponsorship, Sport Finance and Economics, Sport Communication, and Sport Marketing. His current research agenda focuses on the intersection between marketing, consumer behavior, sponsorship, and revenue generation, with an emphasis on participatory sports as catalysts for community development and positive changes in society. Dr. Bogina’s service to campus includes coaching KU Sport Management’s undergraduate sports sales and competition teams, serving as the event director for the annual Mawson Scholar Speaker Series event, as the faculty ambassador for KU’s Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences Department, as a faculty representative on the Athletic Director’s Advisory Council, designing and teaching the KU Sport Management program’s Study Abroad and Global Experience summer classes (available to undergraduate and graduate students at KU), and is the faculty representative of the KU Club Baseball team. His own sports industry career experience includes working in college athletic fundraising and development, event operations, media operations, corporate partnerships and activation, and coaching.

In 2023, Dr. Bogina was selected to serve on the Emerging Leaders Advisory Board for the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission & Foundation, which connects him with local, regional, national, and international sports and related industry stakeholders. Outside of the sports industry, Dr. Bogina supports the local community by substitute teaching kindergarten through high school for the Lawrence, Kansas USD 497 school district.

Dr. Bogina is an avid runner; he qualified for the 2020 and 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon. Represented Team USA at the 2019 Road 50k World Championships in Brasov, Romania. He finished as National Runner-Up in the 2019 U.S. Road 50k Championship, and was a NCAA Division II cross country/track and field student-athlete for the Pittsburg State Gorillas (2x NCAA Cross Country National qualifier).
